Assam: Fear of Flooding in Rangia as Nuna River Overflows its Embankment

RANGIA: The incessant rains have caused floods in several parts of the state. The Rangia region of the state is one the latest to be affected by floods. Heavy rains in the neighbouring country of Bhutan have led to a rapid increase in water levels.

With continuous rainfall in the region, the Puthimari River passing through the region is now in spite and the people of the Rangia region are now living in fear of a massive flood. Meanwhile, the Nuna River has overflowed its embankments in the Khupnikhuchi locality of the Rangia region, triggering fears of damages to the embankment and submerging the villages in the region. More than 100 villages are now under the fear of being flooded if this embankment is damaged by soil erosion.

Local people are trying their best to protect this embankment from any further damage. The locals have alleged that even after multiple complaints, the district administration as well as the water resources department have not taken any steps toward protecting them. So the people of the nearby locations are working round the clock to prevent any further damage to the embankment.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said on Tuesday that the incessant rainfall in the upper catchment area of Bhutan is also responsible for the surge. The ASDMA said, “There has been a panic situation among the population of western Assam, linking the rising water levels and floods to the release of water from the Kurichhu Dam in Bhutan. However, it is crucial to understand that the flood situation in western Assam is not solely caused by the water release from the dam but is also a result of continuous rainfall in both the upper catchment areas of Bhutan and Assam.” The number of affected villages has increased to 523 from 444.
